Movie Idea - Break of Dawn

 Break of Dawn

Genre: Action/Thriller/Drama

When dawn rises, the city of Washington is under attack by a terrorist group named Snake Eye (SE). A skilled agent, Dawn Louis, is at the rescue as she follows the SE and gets a group of stranded civilians to help her gain the city’s power after bombs have been dropped and guns have been fired. The President and the government are all killed and the terrorists launch chemical bombs to drug the public. Using the money in the White House, the terrorists manage to connect to the UK, France, Germany and the rest of America. Shortly after, the leader of SE (unknown) kills the agent and her group, launches a nuclear bomb to kill out the whole of America. The movie ends with the leader speaking to Europe through America’s technology, saying the words ‘You’re next’.

Change of Film- Taken

Taken

I have changed the film to Taken as I have more interest in this genre. The film poster, with a cover/central image of Liam Neeson.

Cover
Liam Neeson is an experienced action themed actor who stars in films such as Star Wars, Clash of the Titans and Batman Begins- he is seen holding a gun (connoting action and violence) and a leather jacket which gives him a mysterious effect. Secondary images include a girl and almost a photo stream of key moments, displaying some actors. The title is written in the middle, in front of the actor which makes it stand out, The tagline is long but effective, it reads "They have taken his daughter, he will hunt them, he will find them and he will kill them". Which automatically connotes death and crime. You can see that this film fits in a Action and Crime because of his gun and the fact that he will 'kill' them. The critic review is simple and states "The best action flick since Bourne". Bourne is a sequel of action films which all are rated strongly on IMDB. The fact that it says it is better makes people who have seen the Bourne collection challenge their knowledge. The production blurb is the institutional facts and where you can see it (September 26).

Film Trailer
The film trailer is a assortment snapshots of the film, all revolving around phone conversations. The film was made by Fox and Eurocorp. It was very fast paced but didn't give away too much about the film- it gave the main gist and the things which you must understand. It introduces all the main actors-Liam Neeson (Star Wars, Batman), Famke Janssen (X Men) and Maggie Grace (Twilight). It also reviews the director, Pierre Morel (Before Sunset). It tells us that it will be released in September and gives us an overview of the film. It doesn't give away much but makes the audience understand that this film is about a kidnapping and revenge.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street

DVD  COVER ART

I chose the Wolf of Wall Street because I am confident about all of the inferences and connotation; I watched the trailer for an insight and I think I have loads to say. As it is so popular, I believe I will be able to research quickly and easily without digging through information to get further information.

Institutional Background: This film was produced by Paramount Pictures who worked along side with Red Granite Pictures to create this film.
Universal Pictures International is responsible for the distribution of this film.

No Brand Loyalty: This film fits into the Biographical genre as it is based on a book, based on a person. Also, this film has elements of Crime and Comedy. I think it will fit into Crime because of the amount of money being thrown around - it connotes suspicious as it hasn't been put into a bank account - it is lying around everywhere . I reckon that this also fits into the Comedy genre because of the use of parties and the actor Jonah Hill who is mostly in Comedy movies due to his talent of humour. The movie I have chosen is not a sequel but is promoted by the director : Martin Scorsese who is known to be an award winner. The Oscar Nominees Jonah Hill and Leonardo Dicaprio also appeal to people who enjoyed previous movies.

Its All a Matter of Timing: The UK release date for this film was 17th of January 2014 and was a big hit in the theatres. The first trailer released was by Paramount Pictures (the one above) on the 16th of June 2013 (linking for the American release). Posters, like the one below, were released in time for this to advertise it.

It's a Social Thing: The rating for this movie (IMDB) is 8.3 which is successful for a movie which is Biographical. Also rated 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. "Amazing film which I enjoyed every single moment. However, I think that it should contain less swearing!!" Sammy.
"Little bit too dramatic but hilarious!!" Sitman123,
"But then again – I guess it is a comedy. So the infamous Quaalude scene is not horrific but rather hilarious, the scenes of excess and of criminality are not equally appealing and repulsive " Anonymous
"This film repulsed me and made me feel sick at many point - I do not recommend this for any children as they would loose their clean (if so) minds which i would be appalled about. Leonardo Dicaprio should be ashamed at his work - it was terrible and really awkward!" LizzyAn

Risky Business: The original budget for this film was set at $100,000,000 (one hundred million dollars). The film made just under $24 million dollars in the first weekend which was 'A success'. In total, the film earned $300m in the World Wide Box office.

Stars in Their Eyes:  The director has previously directed films such as Shutter Island (also casting Dicaprio). Beforehand, he had directed films in the same genre (biographic) such as Goodfellas. Most films ended in a wide spread success. The main star in this film, Leonardo Dicaprio has starred in Shutter Island, Titanic, The Great Gatsby, Inception and The Departed (also directed by Martin Scorseses). Most of the films are similar to this, including rich people, dramas and crime. All the main stars and the director are mentioned in the trailer because all of them have good reputations which will attract people to this movie.

Trailers - NCIS

Trailers- Blog

Trailer 1 - Inside Man

This movie is an example of a Crime and Drama with elements of Thriller. This is because it is filled with crime and dramatic music and many 'jump' bits. This would not necessarily be an action because there is no physical fighting - there is weapons but they are rarely used by the villain/main character. This is mainly crime because it is a Police and Criminal matter.

Narrative:  Unusually, the main character is the villain. The hero is the police force (and manager). This story is being told by the male who is very smart and has a strict plan. He holds a bank hostage and the police are all clueless but eventually his plan unwinds but there is no real happy ending.

Characters: The characters include the leader of the group who are robbing the bank, who tells the story at the beginning (Denzel Washington). Also, it includes the police force who is managed by Clive Owen.

Iconography: There is an iconic moment of when the man is talking to the camera, telling the audience about himself. As it is so unusual, people find it entertaining to watch a movie which is anchored by the villain in this situation.

Setting: This is set in the USA, in a bank.

Trailer 2 - 500 Days of Summer

This fits in the Romantic Comedy and Drama genre as it is about a romance which goes through many complicated turns, with humour and drama (towards the end and middle).

Narrative: This story is about a man (Joseph-Gordon Levitt) , who works at a card company, and is attracted to a woman (Zooey Deschanel) who plays the role of an indecisive assistant. These to fall in love and spend much time together until it all goes wrong and they break up, you would assume that they stay together for a happy ending but they break up and stay like that. It is very typical and fairytale all until the climax stage. It is shown in 500 days of Summer (the woman's name).

Characters: The characters are not too typical but it is about a man who is laid back and falls for a woman, however, the woman is feminine but does not take the role in a typical Rom-Com because the female character would be the one who is lovestruck - in this, it is the male lead. They go together as an average young couple who mess around and have fun.

Iconography: 'You should know... this isn't an love story' is the iconic line in this trailer because it is telling us before hand that it is not going to go well. Normally, it would be hidden but they have said it to appeal to people who want to see what happens.

Setting: This is office love, set in offices, bars, apartments, parks and Ikea to represent a couples activities - especially of this age.

Trailer 3- Olympus Has Fallen

This is typically an Action movie due to the violence and language. The trailer presents many guns and explosions, denoting violence.

Narrative: This is about a terrorist attack on the USA White House. An ex-agent, Banning is trapped in the building and is forced to rescue everyone - including the president and code holders which lead to attack the whole of USA and the countries near it.

Characters: A archetype president who is fearless and typically snobbish agents. The villain is also very typical with an eager assistant (female).

Iconography: 'Olympus Has Fallen' which is the title but also is said a number of times. 'Olympus' is code for the White House using words that the security agent would mostly likely use when describing the White House.

Setting: This is based in a hospital - filled with injured people and mainly a White House and the surrounding streets.

Analysing Pictures

Analysing Minority Report

Picture 1

Picture 2

Picture 3
Photo 1

The photo is a picture of angry police officers/cops from the future. I think that they might be slightly angry because of the facial expression from the man in front which is angry yet confused. His stare is strong and looking directly at the camera connoting he is serious and feeling formidable and better than everyone.
It is focusing on him because he is the main and head police officer; everyone follows his lead. The use of a *medium close-up captures him and the background of other men. The picture is focused on 4 men and then there is a man in the background who is out of focus showing that these characters will be the main police officers who are better than the others and do more to capture John (the main character/hero/Tom Cruise).
This picture tells are something is about to happen, something filled with action (police officers fugitive).
*medium close-up: When the waist and head are both visible and the actor is roughly in the middle and has other characters and background.

Photo 2

This picture shows a car. This shows characters crashing into the top of the car (broken car). This picture is at a *long shot because it shows the subject (the car) and it also shows the background of a warehouse/shed.
The car has also been placed at an angle so we can see the condition it is in before and after the crashing of the dummy/ character.
It is focusing on the car because that is the main subject in the picture. There is other sheds but they are not important; to let the viewer know, they focus on the car.
This picture also tells us that it will result in an action related theme because of the body falling on it. This is at a perspective angle because something can pop out of nowhere and it also connotes danger; busted car, dark place and screaming.
*Long shot: shows the whole subject and plenty of background

Photo 3

This picture is showing the main character/Tom Cruise. This picture was taken in a *close up to show the emotion of the character. In this picture he seems confused and slightly distressed but then he also seems like he has control of the situation.
It is focusing entirely on the character with a small amount of background (blurred). The character may be in a fight with someone (planning out his next move). He doesn’t seem guilty but seems innocent as if he doesn’t know why this is happening. This was taken just to see the expression of the character.

*close up: to focus closely on one subject (a part of the subject only).

Colouring a fruit bowl

Fruit Bowl

Fruit Bowl - Colour

I didn't have a colour theme; I just chose a poster I like.

Using the Eyedropper tool on Adobe Photoshop, I used colours from a Spongebob Squarepants picture to randomly colour in a fruit bowl. I tried to group the colours together to make it seem like each piece of fruit was a character but towards the end it didn't look too great so I randomly but the colours in random places which made it look slightly more coordinated but less planned out due to some clashes of colours giving it the look of a random fruit bowl.

I tried to make the colours and the fruits completely different. Example: the grapes are different (unusual) colours.
I chose to use a Spongebob picture because it was a variety of unusual colours of different shades and I thought they would merge together nicely as the colour coordination in the picture was pretty good and made sense, however it was slightly odd. It made me think of off coloured fruit (which is why I chose it).

Overall, it turned out better than I expected because of the different range of colours from the picture I used (almost recreating the image).I didn’t have a colour theme; I just chose a poster I like.

Prison Break: Key Concepts//LIAR

Prison Break Poster

Key Concepts – LIAR.
Prison Break:
Language: Prison Break is promoted by using the main characters on the front. The use of an explosion and them standing in front connotes that they are more dominant and everything else is put behind them now. The dark colours symbolize dark times. Both the characters are sweating (tired), also they are staring straight at the camera (direct and serious). There is a helicopter and the tower and lights and explosion which indicate violence and ‘running away’. Although there is no slogan on the poster, the slogan if ‘The Break is Just the Beginning’ and for the last episodes//film, it is ‘The Final Break’ which is dramatic and pulls people into it. What happens after they break out? Who will they save in The Final Break? The picture of them indicates they are slightly burnt and bruised from gunshots and running through different, harmful conditions. When you look at the picture you can hear an explosion and sirens. You can hear the explosion because of the vibrant yellow//orange splashing around in the background. You think of sirens because of the lights.
The title looks bruised and dirty which could connote rough times. The dirty white stands out against the dark blues of the sky (night time).

Institution: This programme is produced by Paul Scheuring (a clever man with clever ideas) and was first released on FOX. FOX is multinational, however Paul Scheuring is a smaller institution who made the programme and produced it with FOX.

Audience: This programme is mainly directed to men. I would say 60% male and 30% female as it does contain 2 strong female characters who appear properly later on in the series (Sarah and Gretchen). I think it is viewed more by men because there are many male leads throughout the series. The age rating is 15 but is more aimed at 18-40 because it is a pressure cooker drama which targets that age group. It contains slang nicknames which some people over a certain age won’t understand. For example, ‘C-Note’ is a name which some younger people won’t understand (Benjamin Franklin) or ‘Fish’ or even ‘Snowflake’ which is slightly racist. Some people will also not understand the D.B.Cooper story which is pretty important to understand seasons 1 and 2.  However, ‘T-Bag’ is understood by most people (who know his full name).
Also, it contains very different and hard to understand jokes/plans (which people younger than 15 won’t understand as well as people in their twenties). The age rating should definitely be a 15 due to the amount of violence, language and negative messages (attracting more men).

Representation: There are not many stereotypes in this series. However, you could say it was being racist against white people as all of the bad people are white (including the 2 main ‘villains’ who kill everyone, Christina Rose and Krantz). You could also say that there weren't enough black characters. The black characters don’t have a big lead but there are 2 which are mentioned and appear in a few episodes (C-Note and Lang). One stereotype in this is that the man is the male lead and is more dominant. Another stereotype is that it includes a woman as a ‘damsel in distress’ which is typical for most things, typically, her lover is the one who saves her, however, it does add a few unexpected twists such as a fake death and a hand in a box.

It presents the main character Michael as the brains and then Lincoln is the dumb but aggressive one. In the picture, it makes Michael seem more like the serious one and Lincoln as the one on the side as he is behind and is in a different position.

Media Debate Part 2

Media Debate Part 2

“Are my Facebook friends the same as my friends in real life?”

I disagree with this because it isn’t true for me. My Facebook friends are just people I know; I don’t necessarily like some of them but I mainly have them if I ever need to talk to them/ I like being nosy and seeing what people are doing with their lives. Also, I like to have them on Facebook to see what becomes of them in the future. Facebook is just to ‘connect’ with people and ‘fill up your newsfeed’ so when you’re bored you can see what other people have liked/shared.

However, everyone I add, I know them; I don’t add random people. Everyone I know either went to my school goes to my school or is my family in any way.

Having social networks helps us become friends with others, however, in this day it is mostly used for nosiness, not friend making but that is normal.

Media Debate

Media Debate

"Teenagers are involved in more anti-social behaviour than any other age group"

I partly agree and I partly disagree. I agree because of technology but I disagree because of theft.

I partly agree because of modern technology (teenagers are always on the phone) or they use social networking sites. I agree with this side of things. However, some anti-social activities are more involved with other age groups. Adults are more involved in theft then teenagers but people think differently because teenagers are stereotypically involved in this sort of stuff; however, it isn’t true. Adults are involved in more theft then teens. Anti-social behaviour has a wide range of activities and not all of them involve teenagers as much as they involve adults or pre-teenagers.

To conclude, teenagers are involved in many anti-social activities but they are balanced with other age groups such as adults, pre-teens and elders. Teenagers outscore every age group with technology because our generation was brought up with phones and mobiles and maybe vandalism as well but adults are also involved in this type of behaviour (newspapers, phones, work and theft).

HSBC Advert

Imitating the HSBC Advert on 'Different Values' I made one showing 'Perfidy' which means untrustworthy or betrayal. All pictures show a sign of betrayal or doubt. I chose it because it does make people think what is around them- most things are a sign of perfidy in this day and age. In the future, I plan to use less fancy writing and put it in lower case as this is how it is show in the HSBC Adverts. Also, if I was able to do a different word, I would use a word which everyone would understand without going on Google and searching it. I need to make it simple and elegant by using a small word which means a lot. Thinking about it now, I think maybe I would simply use the word 'maybe' or use two words which connect.

News Bulletin-Evaluation

News Bulletin- Evaluation

The 5 stories we chose were:
A Japanese Language Learner
Argentina and Switzerland match
The Madeline Mcann search has reopened
Rita Ora
Suarez bit my finger

We chose the Japanese Language learner from the VLE because when we were looking for the story, Taranpreet kept popping up. We chose the Argentina and Switzerland match because it was very recent and people were talking about it. We chose the Mcann story because it has been reopened and makes people think about reality – little children need to be cautious as nobody is safe. We chose the Rita Ora breaks up with Calvin Harris because of Justin Bieber story because it makes sense to do a story which is famous to young people; using popstars they know who are from Britain. ‘Suarez Bit My Finger’ was the funny story, recapping over and incident which occurred during a World Cup match.

We broadcasted the story easily. We did it simply; first starting with the Greenford Story as it opened the bulletin with something which relates to everyone. The then did the Rita Ora story to let the people know that this for young people – it grips in the people who are interested in celeb gossip. After, we did the Mcann story to give them something serious and educational. The sport story came next because it is a good way to educate people in a fun manner – it gives them an insight of what is happening in the world currently. Lastly, we finished with the funny story to wrap up on a high relaxed note.

To make the script the ideal length; to fit 60 seconds, we wrote about all the topics equally and then we slashed down and cut away the bits that we didn’t need. It was easy to organise the script.

To make each story clear and understandable, we only did the main line which was brief and then we gave 1-2 extra points to back it up to make it clear.  Our group made the broadcast professional by saying it loud, clear and enthusiastic; like it was prepared in a week – not a day.

In the group, I had the role of the journalist. I prepared the script and fished some stories and put it together. I think our group worked well; achieving the roles. I would say 4/5 (5 being the highest). To work more effectively, we should’ve prepared and checked it the script over.

If this opportunity was supplied again, I would’ve taken out the Mcan story and replaced it with the Malaysian Airline Flight Disappearance because it is a new story which has been readdressed recently. Also, it is a worldwide investigation which mostly everyone knows. If I was just to improve it, then I would influence the presenter to be more enthusiastic and have a better understanding of everything - also I would've made him speak louder yet formal as it lacked slightly but it wasn't that bad; it just could use various improvements.

Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis

PRISON BREAK TRAILER
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/AL9zLctDJaU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Genre
The genre of this series or clip is based on action and crime. There are slight bits of comedy and romance but mostly it is based on investigating and action. Also, the main line of the series is crime as it set in a prison and everything that the characters do is a crime. This series is action because there is loads of violence, minor swearing and other various things which wouldn't be scene in a pure comedy series.
Audience
The audience for this is going to be teenagers and young adults. It aimed at 15-35 because there are mainly young adults in it. This series would appear more to men as it based around men however some girls, like me, enjoy it because it is almost an adventure. I think 70% men and 30% women. Also, it is made for older people because of the content. For example, there is a paedophile which wouldn't necessary appear in a children’s television series. Also, it is graphic; it shows a full murder, decaying body, dead children, someone being tortured and then drowned and one of the most sadness; a child being burnt alive which 100% wouldn't be floating around in a comedy.
Platform
This would most likely be seen on a television, downloaded illegally or Netflix. Also, you can view it on anything but those are the most common in this day and age. I watched it on the television and then again of LoveFilm and then I watched it again on Sky.

MUSIC VIDEO – HOLD ON WE’RE GOING HOME
 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/GxgqpCdOKak" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Genre
The genre is a mixture of slow pop and blue as it is kind of sad and emotional. I would say that the video is a mixture of romance and action. The main objective of the video is saving the one you love. They use violence and guns which makes it seem slightly action orientated.
Audience
The video is for 13-35 and anybody who enjoys this music. However, Drake’s music is aimed to teenagers and people the same age of him which makes the song appeal more to people who like his music. The video is aimed to 20 years olds as it based on that age of people.
Platform
This would be viewed on Youtube and social media apps. Also, as it is a song, it will be listened to on the radio and on music channels which are most popular for music which is directed to this sort of generation of people.

ADVERT- EVIAN
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/dBbrpemT7k8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Genre
This particular advert is a comedy advert as it contains dancing babies which are normally seen as comical. It is an advert which is funny to persuade people to buy it and enjoy it and become a baby (subliminal messages). It is basically saying, if you drink Evian water you will become younger.
Audience
This is aimed at 12+ but mostly young adults who want to look younger or are concerned about their age. It is a water brand which ‘makes people feel young’ and lively. It is not only advertising water but also advertising the brand.
Platform
This would be viewed on a device used for Youtube or sites where there is adverts used for buffer entertainment. However, the most common would be on a television as that is where most people pay to have there adverts advertised.

Why did I choose media?

Blog

I chose media because I am interested in technology and creating different things. I like things were you explore a little bit and learn about new things in the process. Also, I am interested in the media in general and think it will be interesting. I am mostly looking forward to the magazine because I think it will be interesting and different to create something like that. In media, I hope to learn about Photoshop and editing. I want to have various skills which will be useful in the future.

The last TV programme I watched was Prison Break – I like it because it is mysterious, has a science factor and it is just interesting. I liked it so much that I ended up watching it again. The last film I watched was probably Mr and Mrs Smith. This film was also good because it was different and funny. I also noticed many errors which surprisingly made me want to continue watching it. Prison Break at a trailer which gripped people into it. It was loads of snips which all linked together and made it look interesting. Mr and Mrs Smith appealed because of the actors. The fact that they were very famous actors made people want to watch it.

The main devices I use to access the media are my Kindle and sometimes my phone. Also I use the television to watch the news. The main stories at the moment are about the World Cup and court hearings.
